Bibles

I have a bible....

Actually I have 4 different bibles. I hate and love each of them differently. There are tons and tons of different translations of the bible and when you go to the bookstore to buy one you have to be careful. So how do you know if you have a "good" bible? How do you know if the bible has a good translation? Or do you even care about the translation? These are questions for yall over the weekend. I know the answers to them, and I know how to pick a good bible from the rest based on my own "scholarly" knowledge of how bibles work, and the various translations. What bible do you use? and why?

Just thought I would through those questions at the world, I will post my opinion on Sunday or Monday. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Comments:
We use the NRSV at church, and it's o.k. I also have a "Good News Bible" (Today's English Version) here at work, but also go to http://unbound.biola.edu where they have lots of translations (including foreign languages).

The Good News one is easy to read, but the "today" style language is sometimes funny. For example, that too-familiar verse from Leviticus reads: "No man is to have sexual relations with another man; God hates that." heehee

I am currently reading the bible A to Z. I've got the New American Bible which has lots of fun notes at the bottom to fill me in on details, references and even some interpretive stuff.

I like a bible that has lots of information about dates, authors, translations etc...
